Woo your Writer Within – like a lover – and you will write With wonder! Romance your Writer Within, just as you would your beloved, and you will have a writing partner for life.
We both know what it’s like to sit at our desks, alone, and experience the following feelings:
- How painful it is to feel stymied by our writing blocks.
- What it feels like to suffer when you know you’re a good writer but can’t seem to get the projects out there. You’ve got fabulous ideas, but hey, it seems to take you too long to get them out.
- Your self-sabotage seems to drag you down and your self-confidence is in the basement.
- You’re feeling overwhelmed because sometimes, in the middle of a project, when it’s not flowing smoothly, your self-doubt takes over and you just don’t believe you can ever finish it!
- When you put pen to page you criticize everything you just wrote.
- You feel too solitary and would rather meet with your pals than put your fingers on the computer keys.
Well, you are not alone. I know all about those feeling. So let me tell you a little bit about myself…
I’ve been writing for over forty years, without great rewards or huge successes – but I keep at it. Sure, I’ve had so many challenges and rejections as a writer that there have been several times when I’ve thought, “Oh, why bother, the work will never go anywhere, who do you think you’re kidding?” Or, “maybe I’ve written such personal stuff that I’m afraid to have anyone else read it.”
For example, when my first book of poetry was published by a literary press, I couldn’t even look at it – it was too raw, too revealing, too much of me in there. So, what did I do? I decided to go onto graduate school, get degrees, and live in my head. Well, that worked for awhile, and I always enjoyed writing impersonal papers. But while working on my PhD dissertation, I would drive out to a park, sit there, meditate – and still write poetry.
You see, I’ve always gotten back to my soul writing.
I believe it was because my inner writer, my creative spirit, always pulled me through those difficult times.
I also realize that when I read something empowering, I know that it is not just an intellectual piece, but that it has come from the depths of the writer. So, although I have written intellectual pieces in the past, I do not come from an ivory tower, but from my heart, and from deep experiences in the writing field.
I know that my challenges are not unique – although they have felt that way at the time – so I believe that other writers could learn from and benefit from the mistakes I’ve made. As you empathize with this writer’s self-sabotage, self-doubt and self-criticism, you’ll “get it” that you’re not alone in your creative process. And, if one writer can successfully come through her creative process issues, you certainly can too.
I have been fascinated with the whole field of Creativity for many years, and while it is a huge topic, I have looked at it from both sides now: the left and the right sides of my brain. Let me explain:
With the left brain, I did my doctoral dissertation as a scientific study: “A comparison of three creative problem solving methodologies,” and I received my Ph.D. from the University of Denver, in 1983. While investigating hundreds of books on creativity, several esteemed creativity-researchers suggested that we are born creative – and that we can re-stimulate this creativity within ourselves. A very exciting discovery!!! I remember (literally) jumping up and down in the stacks of the library when I came across those books. Okay, I was alone in there, but I was so thrilled to read this that I just knew I was on the right track.
My right brain has played in the creative realm for years, writing poetry, songs, essays, educational scripts for Disney, books, and painting. You could say that I’ve been (and still am) absolutely jazzed with the field of creativity. So, I want to make it more accessible for everyone.
I’ve been teaching creative writing for twenty years – and writing books which refer to it. (You might want to look at some of the testimonials from my students, which I’ll include on the Profile Page.) I love seeing the bright light turn on in people’s eyes when they just read one of their pieces: “I wrote that!!! I can’t believe it! I must be a writer then!” they whisper.
In a book I wrote on Peace, which I am currently editing, it says…
“Please listen to your inner Self. Please hear its call,
instructing you to complete your writing, calling you
to embrace love, beckoning you to see the glory of your
own bright, golden light.”
Inner Self: Writer Within. What do I mean by this?
How did I get in touch with my higher Self; my creative Self or Writer Within? Let me tell you…
Many years ago, an X-Ray revealed a lump in my breast and, naturally, I was terrified about what that would mean. Some dear friends suggested that I read a wonderful book called, “You can Heal Your Life,” so I devoured it. I sat and meditated for four hours per day, visualizing tiny little piranhas with huge sharp teeth, chow down on that lump and devour it into nothingness. Well, one month later, three male doctors confirmed that there was no lump left! What a miraculous day that was.
In the meantime, because I was meditating so deeply, I began to write pieces like this:
I am your higher self and will always be with you if you but call upon me.”
Initially, that scared me! What was going on here?
But I continued, wrote pages and pages of these conversations, and eventually wrote a whole book with those dialogues with my higher Self. This led me into a deep awareness of the creative Spirit within myself – and the knowledge that we all have this capability of communicating with our inner creative spirit.
Woo your Writer Within -- and you’ll write with wonder has much of that wisdom in it. Matter of fact, I realize that it was my Writer Within that had me write the book – and expand it when it wasn’t yet ready; to write even more in it just the other day.
Woo Your Writer Within guided me, and will guide you through your writing problems: it will give you a new slant on your writing, and introduce you to your writer within – your writing partner for life.
This book will remind you how creative you really are, so you will renew your belief in your writing.
You were born creative (as the creativity researchers have said), it’s still within you, so, when you tap into it, you will have great gifts to give.
Woo Your Writer Within will empower you – whether you are a “newbie” or an “oldie.”
It will restore your belief in yourself, renew your self–esteem, and lift you up in wonder.
